With a history stretching back to 1938, Elman's brings a longstanding Winnipeg food tradition to the table. From pickles to horseradish and other deli favourites, this Manitoba brand connects familiar flavours with a family story that began long before its products reached store shelves.
The story begins with Samuel Finkleman, known as "Happy", who emigrated from Poland with his young family and their treasured recipes. After living in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and later Selkirk, Manitoba, the family settled in Winnipeg.
Happy began making horseradish in the basement of the family home for friends, relatives and neighbours. Word spread, and he started supplying local restaurants, markets and hotels. As demand grew, the business expanded into a building behind the home.
Years later, his youngest son Manny took over and broadened the range to include kosher pickles, pickled herring, sauerkraut and hot mustards. Those beginnings helped shape the Elman's tradition customers know today.
Elman's range is full of the accompaniments that give a meal character: a crunchy pickle beside a sandwich, horseradish with a roast, or a favourite deli dish shared around the table. These are everyday foods with plenty of personality.
The wider pickle range includes garlic dill favourites, sweet-hot bread and butter pickles, and traditionally cured options. It's a collection with room for both familiar tastes and something a little different.
Horseradish was the foundation of the business, and it remains part of the range. Elman's describes its horseradish and beet relish as a classic family recipe, carrying that connection forward.
